Carrie Morris & Emilia Javanica are two performance artists who met in Indonesia. Reconnecting back in Michigan, Carrie and Emilia joined forces to put their interdisciplinary performance ideas and questions into a forum for sharing ideas with other artists in the Detroit community.
The Performance Laboratory is housed at detroit contemporary, which is a division of the community-based nonprofit organization, The CAID (Contemporary Art Institute Detroit). Formed in 1979 by a visionary group of Detroit-area artists, including Charles McGee and Jean Heilbrunn, The CAID houses three different divisions, one of them being detroit contemporary where the Performance Laboratory is held, and the others being Whitdel Arts and Ladybug Gallery.
